FUCK. I wrote this up twice already but I accidentally exited the browsers. AFGADFGADFGAFGFDG

ok, so I like the song but there's a few things to be said about it. The rhythm, I like it but it's not technically 5/4. I can hear how the beat fits into a sequence of 5/4 but you still managed to make the beat sound like it's 4/4.

The mix sounds kind of muddy so here's a few quick tips for your mixing.

-Pan: Panning creates the illusion that sounds are louder than they really are. Therefor if you pan a sound all the way to the left you can turn it's level down to create more space in the mix for everything else.

-Layer: Layering is simply taking two sounds and putting them on top of each other to create a new sound. Let's start with the snare. It sounds to me like mostly mid range. Find a snare that fits into the high range such as an 808 and slam it on top of the first snare. Viola. The old snare and the new snare combined make a much fuller sound.

-Compress: This one takes some getting used to but compression can do all sorts of neat things. It mostly just gives you more control of your sound. As this is my third time typing this up for you I'm just gonna link to some tutorial. Save my ass some time.

That should keep you busy for some time. Keep experimenting with the sounds and g'luck with your music!

I sort of feel ashamed now that you took so much time out to write that review (3 times).

Regarding that time signature: that is probably because I'm not very familiar with "strange" time signatures yet. I basically did K----S---------K--S-- or something like that, which isn't all that different from the 'standard' drum and bass beat, I suppose.

I'm not much of a kind in abstract drum programming, but I'll work on it.

As for the other tips: I actually do know about all these, and I usually apply them as well. This song, however was "slapped together" in 4 hours and was more of an experiment, a mockery, if you will, of dubstep. I tried to fit it into dumbstep (which I seem to have failed at), because I'd like to join your little clique.

So yeah, the bad, rushed mixing and such can be explained by the fact that it was actually rushed.

Thanks for the pointers and the nice review though! (And the undeserved ten ;-)

FIRST!

Fuck man that voice synth was sexy. the panning gave me something to think about too. I usually have trouble commenting on ambient stuff because a lot of it sounds the same to me. This song had some serious character to it though. I'm honestly extremely turned on right now. This song got me hard.

lol quarl u so funny thanks for the review

damn, that automation on the reese was sliiiick. i loved that shit man. i'm going to guess that was done up in reason? that synth sounded a lot like a malstrom patch i commonly route up when i'm looking for a quick dirty bass fix.

the melodies were catchy, the drums were predictable but nice. im away from reliable speakers at the moment so i can't comment on the mixing or anything but it sounded like you might benefit a little from playing with panning a tad. dunno, maybe your panning a lot. i'm also drunk.

ZuneInc responds:

Youre right about that reese, that its done with reason, but its the mighty THOR which is creating that sound. The Automation for the reese i improvised in one take and im using as much panning as i can. But not too much :) Thanks a lot for the comment! Its also great that you were drunk :D

haha, i just went through kill bill again with the gf for her first time. those hattori hanzo swords are mad good. not sure if that was what you were referencing but that's what i got. loved hearing this man, really classic sounding tune. im not sure why but i think my browser is glitching up a bit. the player is pausing every half second or something. problem on my end. i had to download to listen to this the way it was meant... it made interesting syncopations though :p

the flute was perfect sounding. nice samps/ patches. the piece is really good and i can't really find anything negative to say about it. i would have thrown a really dirty synth in there that would just go WOOOOOOOMP UMP UMP WEEEEEEEEEET DOOTILY DOOT DOOTILY DOOT then loop x 10 but that's just me. also, that would probably require changing up the entire song... can i haz midi files? :3 :3 :3

S3C responds:

Ha nice! Yeah good catch, the title is inspired by Hattori Hanzo in Kill Bill. Great film(s)!

Thanks for the review, Quarl! yes you can haz midi files, just shoot me a PM with your email and I'd be happy to send! Thanks again.

thinking about aliens perfectly rational.

ill be honest, ive never actually checked out your music and if i have, i don't remember. im glad i decided to pop in. this shiznit is really slick. that rhythm, so fucking weird. normally i wouldn't want to accent every quarter note in an idm piece but you pulled it off so well. the track builds up and breaks down so awesomely too. how you managed to repeat the recipe several times over within six minutes without losing my attention... fucking awesome.

i love this/ you.

InvisibleObserver responds:

You are a bum-tard. I'm not just here for show.

... Oh wait.

lol

i was gonna ask if dumbstep could be 4/4 and still be dumbstep but that ending completely took me by surprise. at first i thought it shifted into 5/4 but now im not sure whether it was just a mild syncopation or a cross rhythm or wut. did you just move the snare around? what happened there? sounds fucking delicious whatever you did. everything else sounds clean as shit too. im in love.

ps, that title is fucking great :)

Reanu-Keeves responds:

Yeah most of it was in 4/4 so I kinda cheated, but I liked the groove. I did change it to 5/4 near the end to mix it up a bit, but also kept a few of the 4/4 clips in there for fun. So it is sorta a cross rhythm or watever

happy review!

this is pretty much perfect for what you set out to do. i might recommend spending more time on your moozicks but then i'd be a complete hypocrite and it's not like spending more time on this would make it any better. good work good sir :)

Numi responds:

I'm very glad you enjoyed the track, sir =D

And yes, I do need to put more time/effort into my mooziks... but I'm just so damn lazy xD

I'm here for a long time, not a good time.
